Ekonaut set up the "Pannonian Garden" eco-installation in Novi Sad, which, in addition to attracting pollinating insects, also educates citizens on how to contribute to the survival of these endangered species and highlights the importance of green areas for biodiversity and for all of us.
Many world and European cities have begun to systematically adapt their surfaces to useful and autochthonous insects, and citizens are increasingly taking part in the preservation of the immediate environment. With the aim of recognizing urban bees and pollinating insects as an important factor in a healthy environment, as well as encouraging the development of urban beekeeping and gardening as a tool for sustainable urban development, Ekonaut set up the eco-installation "Pannonian Garden". It was installed as part of the "Danube Sea" program at the "Novi Sad Capital of Culture" event. This installation, which is dedicated to the promotion of local biodiversity, especially related to the Danube watercourse through our country, was realized in cooperation with industrial designer Ivan Erkić.
The installation "Pannonian Garden" highlights the significant contribution of green areas in the city when it comes to biodiversity, climate change and the health of citizens. The installation was placed in front of the premises of the French Institute in Novi Sad, which is located near the promenade on the Danube, the popular Štrand. It was installed in the presence of the employees of this Institute who will be in charge of the maintenance of these plants. Visitors to the French Institute and passers-by are welcome to enjoy the "Pannonian Garden", and as a bench is also part of the installation, it is possible to sit down and spend quality time. The installation has a hexagon at its base, a geometric shape found in honey bee hives, and contains eight planters with twenty decorative, edible or spice plant species that bloom and thus represent a polygon of enjoyment for both humans and insects.
At the end of July 2022, Ekonaut also participated in the summer segment of the "Danube Sea" program and, in cooperation with local scientists engaged in research on pollinating insects, presented a specific scientific-popular program consisting of several interesting workshops. The program was held within the "Pavilion on the Beach", on the city beach which is the epicenter of Novi Sad's summer life, in cooperation with partner organizations Ekohub, Habiprot and Back Yard Brains. Local biologists from the Habiprot Association took adults and children on a "Walk with a Biologist" through Kamenički Park, where the attendees learned about the biodiversity of this park on the banks of the Danube. Habiprot also held a special workshop on the Štrand called "Hidden World of Insects" where visitors had the opportunity to see a collection of insects and look at each insect under a magnifying glass and thus come into contact with this diverse world that lives around us and is an integral part of a healthy ecosystem. At the workshop "Bees - more than honey", which was held in cooperation with the association Ekohub from Belgrade, those present could find out why bees are declared the most important creatures on the planet, how to distinguish them from similar insects, what they feed on and what their life cycle is. The "Interesting Neuroscience" workshop was held in collaboration with Back Yard Brains, an international organization of neuroscientists, and demonstrated how easy it is to perform real neuroscience experiments, even on the riverside promenade. During the program, Ekonaut presented the publication "Introduction to garden communities", as well as the project of the Initiative for urban garden communities, which is implemented as part of the "Green Incubator" project of the Belgrade Open School, with the financial support of the European Union and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
