Within the project "Initiative for Garden Communities"we invite you to help us map the locations in the city of Belgrade that are already used or have the potential to become a common garden of the neighborhood or other local community. If you have noticed in any part of the city, or near the city, a plot that you assume is in public ownership, and which could be arranged as a common garden for all generations, please let us know by filling out the questionnaire at this LINK.

Urban garden communities are open areas where individuals or groups grow plants of their choice. They exist in most European cities and have numerous socially useful purposes, such as physical and social rehabilitation, opportunities for work and employment of economically disadvantaged sections of the population, animation of elderly citizens and enabling all generations to pursue healthy hobbies in horticulture, gardening and vegetable growing. Such places have both historical and cultural value and often become popular picnic areas with additional facilities and an accessible source of healthy food.
The formation of the system of urban garden communities in many cities around the world is recognized as one of the tools for development and sustainable management of urban spaces, but also as a means to provide food sources at the local level and achieve microclimatic, social and economic benefits. At a time when Belgrade is threatened by constant pollution, uncontrolled investor urbanism and the upcoming climate crisis, garden communities are emerging as one of the solutions that would improve the quality of life in the city and improve the process of adapting to climate change. For these reasons, we launched the project "Initiative for Garden Communities" , which will systematically work on the development of this concept through a series of activities in the coming period, and the first step is to map locations that are already or could become joint gardens of Belgrade. This mapping step aims to provide us with a clearer picture of the situation on the ground, as well as to enable us to establish cooperation with local communities in the future and potentially advocate the establishment of a garden community through some future initiatives and projects.

The project "Initiative for Garden Communities" is implemented within the project of the Belgrade Open School "Green Incubator", with financial support from the European Union and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. The content of this site does not necessarily reflect the views of donors or the Belgrade Open School, and "Ekonaut" is solely responsible for it.
